GLUCOSAMINE AND SHELLFISH ALLERGY

Question:  I checked on the label of a bottle of glucosamine supplements and was surprised to see that glucosamine comes from shellfish. I have an allergy to shellfish, so taking it could wreak havoc worse than my arthritis, right?

Answer:  Maybe not. Glucosamine is a natural substance, extracted from crab, lobster, or shrimp shells, that is taken in capsule form. Some manufacturers say not to take glucosamine if you have a shellfish allergy, but the Arthritis Foundation says that the risk of allergic reaction is very small. In any event, it's always wise to check with your doctor before taking glucosamine or any other supplement.
